An experiment

Recently, I had a really interesting conversation with a few of my friends. We were all sort of reminiscing (for lack of a better word) about the first time we had sex. For many people this is a very memorable experience, because it an important coming-of-age benchmark. We came to a consensus that having sex for the first time (at least for girls) was usually unpleasant and underwhelming. For some reason, this seemed like a good premise for a poem, so I wrote something that may or may not be poetry:

Introductory Intercourse

in my parents' basement
we moved to the beat
of the washing machine
thump
thump
thump
it hurt like hell
and was over
before the spin-cycle

****

people with low ceilings
should not own
bunk beds
halfway through
i hit my head
i got a concussion

****

i wanted candles
and flowers
and all that romantic shit
i settled for
the back seat
of an '89 bronco

****

it wasn't at all
what i expected
i felt betrayed
by seventeen magazine

****

when it was over
his dad came home
i hid in the shower
and cried

****

am i the reason
he stopped
liking girls?

****

we weren't in love
at some point
we just agreed
we might as well
get it over with
